Reengineering and modernizing a business critical Legacy System

Legacy technologies were popular once and may occasionally still help a company to ‘do its job’. But they are not easy to maintain and predominantly predate the people who manage and use it. One such challenge was faced by a billion-dollar business in the US. An accounting and operation application of a petrochemical marketing company was frequently throwing an untraceable error and the system required rebooting for any further use. 15% of the employees’ time was spent in reconciling data after system failure. In short, the employees were playing catch up and that it took them 3 extra days in a month to get standard work processed.

With our introduction, a strategy was put in place to move the existing Delphi system to an intelligent and high performing ASP.NET system. Here, we outline key points that emerged as tangible benefits to the company:

  1. 20% lower IT support costs – with the inclusion of a new extended team of experts for effective maintenance and scaling
  2. Uninterrupted servicing – phased transition with no major technical or architectural debt
  3. Minimal change management – we devised a high performing engine under an old hood of a familiar UX, so veterans in the company effortlessly switched over
  4. Future mobility changes integrated – the system was equipped to be migrated to the cloud
  5. No more manual data checking – improved data quality and no room for human error
  6. Improved flexibility – environment parameters included, no more manual recalibration

Now, the new modernized system is an efficient application that was built on the strengths of the past, providing competitive advantage to the current business, and prepped for future business challenges – a fitting example of an ideal legacy migration process. This also brings to light the existence of several small to medium sized companies across US using legacy systems that are mission critical. The importance of this solution emphasizes the primary need for a viable transition strategy that could be made smoothly, efficiently and cost-effectively. With the imposed fragility of operations and criticality of data, we were chosen as sustenance partners to help a billion-dollar business thrive.
